The climate of England can be described as temperate maritime climate. England is also well-known for its weather. It may be sunny in the morning but it will become rainy at noon. Accordingly, a beautiful and practical hat becomes so necessary for the British. Besides, the Englishmen go out with an umbrella or a raincoat. A hat can warm them in winter and protect them from being damaged by the sun in summer.

Maybe most of the people know the crime drama television series Sherlock produced by an international co-production of the British network BBC and the American station WGBH Boston, along with Hartswood Films, with Moffat, Gatiss, Sue Vertue and Rebecca Eaton serving as executive producers. The drama stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. You must be fascinated by handsome and talented Sherlock and amazed at the friendship between Sherlock and Watson. Today we will talk about the hats worn by the two main characters in the special episode that is set in Victorian London(1837-1901) when people started to re-interpret classical decoration, including art, clothing, architecture and other areas.

A hat is a must for men in this period. In the special episode, gentlemen wear two kinds of hats for formal occasions. One is Sherlock’s top hat, also known as the silk hat. The top hat was designed at the end of the 18th century. When riding a horse, the hat is not easy to be blown away because it can be worn tight. Thus, the hat became so popular in the Victorian era among gentlemen and nobility. Another hat “deerstalker” also attracts attention. Deerstalker is a kind of hat with a brim on the back and front.

The hat worn by Doctor John Watson is called bowler hat. The hat appeared in the middle of the nineteenth century, and was not worn by the upper class until the late nineteenth century. Until now, members of the British Royal Family will wear the hat to attend formal and major activities.
